Today's blog post [link in bio] is in honor of the first day of NEDA week, a movement that's super important to me not only because of my work in healthcare, but because it's touched my own life in very real ways.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ My eating disorder started with good intentions. I was an athlete and I started focusing on nutrition to boost my training. I focused on "clean eating," believing that each morsel of food I put in my body would directly translate into my running performance. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I was wrong.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ My restrictive eating never gave me anything, it only ever took away from who I was. For seven years, I believed the phrase that we so often hear: "You are what you eat." But what I finally learned when I chose RECOVERY over anorexia and LIFE over restriction was that I am so much more than the food on my plate, the number on the scale, or the size of my pants, and you are too. I only wish I'd learned that hard lesson sooner! #hindsightis2020⁠⠀ ⁠⠀

Random fact: I used to be really into music. Even though I don't have as much time to play anymore, I attribute a huge part of who I am today to the season of my life when I was really invested in music. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Music became something productive and positive for me to think about while I was doing the hard work of healing my relationship with food, and trying to avoid the negative thoughts that had held me captive for so long. [LINK IN BIO]⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ As Kylie Mitchell (@immaEATthat) says, "If you feel like your weight is the most interesting thing about you...you need a freaking hobby!" She's not wrong. Picking up music as a hobby was a fundamental part of my recovery. ⁠⠀

Follow this simple formula and you can re-create everything from the #ketodiet to #sugarfree. There's no such thing as a magic solution to health, weight loss, or food freedom. But, the more you try to look for one, the more insane you're going to feel around food. #eatwithfreedom⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀

I'm so excited to share my latest adventure - I'm writing a book!⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I've been blogging for as long as I can remember, but last year I started a new adventure by self-publishing a few devotionals on Amazon. Then, a few months ago I signed a contract with @broadleafbooks for a non-fiction book about intuitive eating from a Christian perspective, uncovering God's design for the role of food in the human life. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ The writing/editing process has been more wonderful and more challenging than I expected it to be, but if I've been sure of anything over the past two years, it's that this book needs to be written. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what makes life meaningful (expect a few blog posts about it in the near future) and two things that NEVER comes to mind are food & my body. Instead, the things that make my life the most meaningful have nothing to do with ME at all. I've been posting on this account for two years this month, and I've never actually introduced myself. So, I figured it's time! ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ A little about me...⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I'm Alexandra, a food scientist, intuitive eater, and soon-to-be functional medicine physician. ⁠I write/post about natural health, recovery from disordered eating, food, faith, and other things that spark joy. 🤩⠀ ⁠⠀ I earned my Bachelors from Purdue University in West Lafayette and stayed on for an extra year of graduate school in public health and clinical nutrition before starting my medical program. During my undergrad, I worked in a lab at the Purdue Center for Cancer Research studying the use of blueberry-derived anthocyanidins in cancer treatments. I learned SO much during my time there, but most importantly, I realized that I very much prefer human patients to lab rats. Because none of us wake up and say to ourselves, “How can I make myself feel worse?” From pimple popping to the latest fad diet, everything seems good and dandy until it isn’t anymore.

I love Valentine's Day because it gives me an excuse to bake. I mean, I guess I don't really need an excuse to bake...but I like having an extra one! So, I've been doing exactly that on this sweetest day of the year, and wanted to share a new favorite recipe with you. I adapted this Graham Cracker Toffee from @averiesunshine and I think this is going to be a new staple. The bonus is that it only takes about 10 minutes. ⁠The recipe for my less-sugar version made with coconut oil is on my blog today! [Link in bio]⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ What's your favorite Valentine's recipe?⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀

I've made a number of bean "brownies" over the years, and some of them are truly delicious. But they play a very different role in my life than regular brownies. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I generally eat in a balanced way, choosing carbs/protein/fat/fiber with most meals and snacks. A bean brownie is really more like a granola bar in terms of its nutritional value, and certainly is a delicious addition to my life. But it isn't as rich and satisfying as a REAL brownie, so I don't try to make that substitution anymore. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I've learned the hard way that eating a bean brownie when I'm craving a few bites of a real dessert can set me up for a binge. Trust me, eating a standard Betty Crocker brownie is WAY healthier than binge eating an entire pan of "bean brownies." #eatwithfreedom⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀
