We Are Constantly Evolving

The person I was ten years ago is very different from the woman I am now, and likewise different from who I will be in another decade. My knowledge has grown, my interests have evolved, and I think in some regards my temperament has shifted, too. God has grown my sense of peace and patience over the years, and I pray that he will continue to guide me in these areas, and more.

Unsurprisingly, my body has also changed over the years. As I’ve matured into a fully grown woman, my levels of body fat, muscle tone, and overall shape have evolved, and will continue to do so throughout my adult life.

In today’s day and age, we tend to have the view that we are supposed to stay stagnant. Many of us long for a more youthful physique, find ourselves frustrated with wrinkles or saggy areas, blemishes and gray hairs. But I would argue that these physical changes represent the rich experiences of our lives, which have formed our hearts and minds into who we are today. The ways that our bodies change over time are normal, natural and good and should be embraced and celebrated rather than feared. We were never promised that we would stay the same, and I am compelled to believe that we shouldn’t try to, either. Our bodies carry us through life, and for this we should honor them!

Speaking of change, some of you may have noticed that things look different around my blog lately. Much of the theme has transitioned — from cool greens to cozy pink, from busy and bountiful to streamlined and simple. I feel that the aesthetic changes of my social media and web presence reflect changes happening in other areas of my life. As I’m growing in my career (as well as in life in general) I have more of a vision of what my passions are, what drives me, and where I’m headed. Since these changes affect you, my clients and readers, I wanted to share a little bit about what you can expect in the following months:

Instagram

For the foreseeable future, I’ll be posting daily on Instagram through the news feed and my story. Like the blog, topics will include intuitive eating, tasty food, Christian faith, and some tid-bits of my own life. In general, you can expect more posts like the following:

Resources

I’ve been working on creating a number of helpful resources, meant to empower and inspire readers at the intersection of food and faith. These include an e-book and a devotional bible study, among others. I’ll be updating you soon on the status of these, including information about when they will be released and how you can access them.

Blog

I will be posting twice per week, on Mondays and Fridays, with occasional extras as they are relevant. Topics will include intuitive eating, health & wellness, Christian faith in practice, my favorite recipes, as well as thoughts from my life in general. These themes have been consistent from the beginning, but I will be incorporating a stronger representation of my faith background in every post, even those of other topics. My hope is to encourage others in their relationship with food, motivated by trust in the God who created them.

Natural Medicine

For those of you who don’t know, I’m currently pursuing a medical degree focused on holistic health. I have one year left of my program, and am presently completing my clinical rotations at a health center in the Chicagoland area. When I graduate, I will practice as a licensed physician, specializing in natural approaches to internal disorders such as autoimmune disease, women’s health concerns, and physiological stress responses. As I progress through my education and come closer to graduating, I’ll be further incorporating this perspective in my posts and offering resources for those interested in working with me in this area of their health. In the mean time, stay tuned!

  1. I am 59 years old Christian woman. I spend last year attending an eating disorder clinic as an outpatient after my psychologist convinced me I was anorexic and too skinny. I gained 10 pounds. Since 17 years old I have used exercise to burn calories. I vowed at that time that I would never be fat, like my mom and grandma. I quit running in April 2019, after running for 40 years. I still tend to walk lots because I’m afraid I’ll gain more weight. I feel good about obeying God by not running, but I still restrict my food intake , don’t eat much sugar, carbs or fatty foods for fear of getting fat. When I do overeat or eat and extra dessert I condemn myself with alot of negative self talk. I want to eat and exercise in moderation; follow the Holy Spirit still, small voice, not my own strict diet rules

    I read your in courage post The Victory of Surrender. EXCELLENT! Thanks. Can you elaborate more on how you gained freedom? How you developed a healthier view of food, exercise, etc.. How you came to love yourself without being slim? How you can enjoy the occasion dessert and not be bombarded with fear of getting fat and negative self talk?

    Thank you so much for sharing your story and your heart. I’m so glad that you’re taking steps to care for yourself, and while it can be a challenging journey, it’s so worth it!

    For me, the biggest motivator was focusing on what I was GAINING as I was giving up my food rules — things like mental clarity, more energy, and peace. In moments that I found myself preoccupied by food or my body, I’d gently re-frame my thoughts to focus on what my desire was (freedom and joy.) I’d remind myself that being thin didn’t help me achieve my goals in life, it only made me stressed. Living in a larger body with freedom and joy was more valuable to me than suffering in thinness. (Plus, I love dessert, and my life feels happier when I allow myself to enjoy it!)

    1. Thanks Alexandra for your prompt reply. I have been thinking and praying about it for a few days. I liked what you said about focusing on what you were gaining by giving up your food rules and re framing your negative thoughts and being honest about loving dessert. I just finished reading a book called A Better Way to Think by H. Norman Wright. And, I read a book a year or so ago called Breaking Busy by Alli Worthington. They both talk about recognizing your negative thoughts (the enemy’s lies) and replacing them with positive thoughts/ statements and/or Bible truths. I think I am going to do that more for the time being. I am a teacher, so I have the summer off and will also read your ebook and more of your blogs too. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I pray God will bless your ministry and enable you to help many more people. (-: Kerry
